"Honesty, reliability, and moral action are embodied in the ethical standard of integrity." (OCT Standards of Practice, Ontario Ministry).
Integrity is defined as having strong moral principles and values; also known as "doing the right thing". With regards to any job, and in this case teaching, there are always opportunities for you to do the wrong thing. Whether this means that you 'pretend' to mark a students test or ignore a students learning disability.
The definition of integrity is well represented by this C.S Lewis quote because it not only defines integrity, but also defines good morale. This is because we should NOT only do the right thing because we know others are watching or because we are going to be judged, but to even go the right thing when no one is watching. So, even if no one would ever find out that you 'pretended' to mark a students test or ignored a students learning disability, you still should not do it because it is morally wrong.
This is a quote that could be a part of a classroom success plan and could be referenced back to daily. Every night, a teacher should be able to go to sleep knowing that everything he or she did at school or in the classroom that day was morally sound. This quote it simple, to the point, and successfully explains integrity.
The level of reflection that I will engage in to utilize whether or not I am using integrity in the classroom is critical reflection. I would ensure that I consider ethical ramifications of school policies and practices and acknowledge that a teacher without ethical morale is a not a good teacher. If I felt like I had secrets, had something to hide, or had any sort of guilt-feeling in my stomach that the issue would need to be addressed immediately.
